step 1

Dialogue

A seasoned sales associate will begin by asking and listening to your custom garment requirements. There are many things we want and need to hear about including any past custom suit experiences, things about the garment you are most insistent about and anything else you feel may be relevant.

step 2

Fabric Selection

An appropriate selection of fabrics will be presented to choose from. Alan David has all the brands including Ermenegildo Zegna, Loro Piana, Dormeuil, Reda, Vitale Barberis and others. In addition, select from an array of privately sourced fabrics that are exclusively available at Alan David. These fabrics come from Italy and England and are the essence of luxury.

step 3

Measurements

At Alan David our expertise is in our ability to measure and fit. Every measurement is taken into account, especially in the shoulder and the posture areas. The average fitter at Alan David Custom has over 25 years of measuring experience.

The 30+ measurements that are taken are then given over to a bespoke patternmaker who assembles a pattern for each individual client. The pattern allows us to craft a true full custom garment.

step 4

Basted Fitting

To ensure a superior fit, Alan David employs a traditional basted fitting. At this stage, the garment is temporarily assembled with loose basting thread, allowing clients to try it on while adjustments can still be made. This process makes it possible to refine posture, balance, and shoulder line, while also incorporating basic changes such as shortening sleeves.

Since the custom suit is not yet fully assembled, adjustments can be carried out without restrictions, something no longer possible once construction is completed. The basted fitting provides assurance that every measurement is precise and that the garment will deliver the highest level of comfort.

step 5

Construct

Your custom garment is now ready to be fully assembled. The state of the art workshop we commission boasts an array of bespoke tailors and pattern-cutters. All custom jackets are constructed with a full canvas chest piece. Unlike many half-canvas or fused garments, the full-canvas allows for the nicest drape with the least amount wrinkling. Features such as pick stitching on the lapels and functioning sleeve buttonholes are hand cut and sewn as well.

step 6

Fitting & Delivery

It is now time to try on your garment and have one final fitting. The adjustments are usually minimal and completed in our on-premise tailor shop. Any adjustments are noted to your file so your pattern can be updated for your next garment.

Your bespoke suits are ready for pickup approximately 4 to 5 weeks from your initial consultation (add 2 weeks for a basted fitting). Alan David stands behind its garments even after the purchase date. Any additional alterations needed within one year of purchase are free.
