Custom Shirt Construction

Alan David commissions full bespoke shirts. The impeccable craftsmanship we offer is the work of old-world custom tailors, creating the finest custom shirts New York has to offer.

All shirts contain the finest interlinings, specially imported from Italy, allowing for optimal structure & softness throughout the shirt.

All collars are first basted and then hand sewn into the shirt. This assures that the collar hugs the back of the neck without creasing or folding.

Every part of the shirt is hand-pressed throughout the assembly process. Pressing between operations ensures the fabric will not shrink, bubble or pucker as it is worn.

Finally, all buttons are mother of pearl to avoid cracking or splitting. All buttons are strongly reinforced to safeguard against wear and tear.

Men’s Custom Shirt Do’s and Don’ts

Do’s

  • Dry clean your shirts, do not put them in the laundry machine.
  • Make sure you review the height of the collar with the tailor. Short necks need a lower collar for optimal comfort and long necks need a higher collar to look balanced.
  • Ask for a sample shirt fitting if you are a hard fit or a perfectionist.

Don’ts

  • Confuse a high super number (like super 180’s) with quality.
  • Get measured by your salesman. You should get measured by a master fitter.
  • Purchase wrinkle free shirts. They are coated with chemicals that do not allow the shirt to breathe. The shirt will become very stiff and very hot.

“When it comes to men’s clothing (and I’m sure women’s, too), there is no better custom shop on the entire east coast than Alad David Custom.”
